So our nation’s First Lady and follow worthy fashionista Michelle Obama stepped out for (or stayed home for?) the annual White House Halloween bash. No costume for Mrs. O, she opted instead for an orange, black and gold ensemble that’s stirring up a bit of controversy. Why you may ask? Well, this fancy frock found on Asos.com bears a striking resemblance to the Savannah Striped Dress from the Fall 2011 collection by Diane von Furstenberg.
Now the DVF original and the Asos.com number listed on the site simply as the “Midi Body Conscious Dress in Metallic Stripe” have a few notable differences. Take a look at the necklines, the width of the stripes, and the obvious differences in hue. I don’t know if I would necessarily call this a knock off as it’s been reported as, but inspired by?…well ok.
Question is, with the current economic state of the country, are we really blaming Michelle for deciding on a less expensive version of the design? I sure am not. With the Furstenberg dress costing $498 and the Asos.com version retailing for just $72, I would have easily made the same call. Plus, it’s not a true knockoff anyway! If they wanted to see actual knock offs, they should have raided my closet back when I was 14. I still have a “Fendi” baseball cap that I hold dear to my heart. I think these folks should all calm down and appreciate the realness that is First Lady Michelle Obama, fellow target shopper.
Love AJ
